Update and Announcements

Hello! Just wanted to post a quick update on me and my life and a couple minor announcements about where this blog is heading.

2025 and 2026 thus far has been quite a struggle for me. I've been dealing with some health problems in both me and my husband that have had a big impact on my life. Everything has fallen behind, and my mental health has been affected. On a positive note, these issues are temporary. My husband is almost fully recovered, and I will be having a surgery in May, which should fix my issues as well.

Recently, I am on a break from my day job, which has given me the time to rest and get things done at my own pace. I am working on catching up on overdue book reviews and plans for the future of my blog.

For Reviews: I am going to temporarily close myself to new ARCs until I get caught back up and recover from surgery. I have also developed a comprehensive new template for reviews and some official ARC reviewing policies. I'll also be slowly going through my backlog and fitting them to my new template.

Articles and Other Topics: I want to get back into writing more articles and posts beyond reviews on this site. This will likely have to wait until after surgery, but I am taking some planning steps towards this now. I will be writing my top books of 2025 soon. I really want to get back to weekly posting again one day.

My Fiction Writing: My fiction writing has fallen behind as well. I am just starting to get it back on track a little. I am revisiting my murder mystery for a potential rewrite. I'm still plugging away at my Sisyphus novella, and starting to outline a couple others.

Thin Slices: Unfortunately, Draft2Digital has imposed some fees that are too much for one little flash collection. I have delisted my book there. It is still available on Amazon, Kobo, and Itchio. I am currently investigating other options for publishing wide and will be relaunching this soon. 

Newsletter: This has been on hold for a while and will continue to be so for a while longer. I will be relaunching my newsletter later this year. 

And a special announcement! 

In the second half of 2026, I will be releasing my first collection of short stories (not flash fiction). It will have ten short stories - 8 previously published and 2 exclusive to this collection. Stay tuned for title reveal, cover reveal, and more!

It is impossible to read Meg Elison's Number One Fan without comparing it to Stephen King's Misery. Both feature a famous novelist kidnapped by an unhinged fan who grows increasingly terrifying over the course of the novel. Both books speak to toxicity in fandom and the entitlement some fans develop towards creators. The Laws of the Skies by Grégoire Courtois

Maybe I’m a sick person. Maybe there is something wrong with me. Because when I read the book’s tagline, “Twelve six-year-olds and their three adult chaperones head into the woods on a camping trip. None of them make it out alive,” it skyrocketed to the top of my to-read pile. When I read the rest of the blurb that promised a child on a murderous rampage, I got even more excited to read it. “Part fairy tale, part horror story” – it seemed perfect for me.   Unfortunately, what I got instead was a bit of a mess. The book does deliver on its promises – everyone dies, it has a fairy-tale flavour, it’s definitely horror – but the way the deaths play out felt forced and even at times, ridiculous. The balance of the tale shifted widely. Some of the deaths were almost slapstick in their delivery, while others were quite gruesome. Ancient History by Liriel McMahon

This one made me nostalgic for my university days! Studying in the library, chatting with my friends about ancient history, hoping to uncover something shocking and cool! I admit the nostalgia may have coloured my enjoyment of the book, but even without that, it's a good story. Ayef dreams of being a Curator, historians who edit the past and present their version to society, but after a bit of a shake-up, her dream shifts to becoming a Historian. Curators obscure the past, while Historians reveal it. But first, Ayef must study under a Curator to learn what exactly it is that they are obscuring. This is the source of the main conflict of the plot and the mystery/reveal about the ancient secrets is interesting and complicated. The quote "history is written by the victors" is often tossed around (and it is mostly true).
