August Reading Plan

In July, I set out my first ever "reading plan", an idea I stole from Cliff's Dark Gems on Youtube. I decided that I liked the idea and am carrying it forward in August. I have also once again signed up for another writing course. This one is a short story writing course from Crystal Lake. In keeping with that theme, I'm going to focus on reading short fiction this month.

July Reading Plan Progress

In July, I set out to read an ambitious 8 books over a few categories and completed 5/8, and read a bonus book that wasn't on my list.

Completed:

  1. The Knave of Graves by S. J. Shank - Read my review here

Already On the Go

  4. Book of Accidents by Chuck Wendig - Audiobook - This will be my second Chuck Wendig book. I really enjoyed Black River Orchard and this one is also part of my Horror Reading Challenge
ARCs

Even with my focus on short fiction, I do have some ARCs to complete. 

5. We Like it Cherry by Jacy Morris - Horror that takes place in the deep, frozen north is one of my favourite things. Read more about what I love about icy horror here.

6. Hemlock and Silver by T. Kingfisher - I am a big fan of T. Kingfisher and was excited to receive an arc of her upcoming work. 

Short Fiction 

I'm going to play a little catch up on the zines I currently subscribe to and start two anthologies this month. I don't expect to finish all of these this month, but I'm going to start working through them. I currently subscribe to Small Wonders, Apex Magazine, and The Stygian Zine. I find it difficult to keep up with monthly subscriptions, so I don't maintain many. I prefer to purchase individual issues when I can, or subscribe to ones that publish less frequently.

7-8. Small Wonders Issues 25 and 26 - I'm a somewhat recent subscriber to Small Wonders, but I love their flash fiction.

9-10. Apex 145 and 146 - A magazine for dark sci-fi, dark fantasy, and horror short fiction. I'm only a few issues behind.

11. Aphrodite from Flame Tree Press - One of these stories is written by me! I'm excited to see who I'm sharing the book with. Aphrodite retellings.

12. Noncorporeal III from Inkd Publishing - I also have a story in this collection and love reading the stories I share pages with. Spooky ghost stories.

This one made me nostalgic for my university days! Studying in the library, chatting with my friends about ancient history, hoping to uncover something shocking and cool! I admit the nostalgia may have coloured my enjoyment of the book, but even without that, it's a good story. Ayef dreams of being a Curator, historians who edit the past and present their version to society, but after a bit of a shake-up, her dream shifts to becoming a Historian. Curators obscure the past, while Historians reveal it. But first, Ayef must study under a Curator to learn what exactly it is that they are obscuring. This is the source of the main conflict of the plot and the mystery/reveal about the ancient secrets is interesting and complicated. The quote "history is written by the victors" is often tossed around (and it is mostly true). The Laws of the Skies by Grégoire Courtois

Maybe I’m a sick person. Maybe there is something wrong with me. Because when I read the book’s tagline, “Twelve six-year-olds and their three adult chaperones head into the woods on a camping trip. None of them make it out alive,” it skyrocketed to the top of my to-read pile. When I read the rest of the blurb that promised a child on a murderous rampage, I got even more excited to read it. “Part fairy tale, part horror story” – it seemed perfect for me.   Unfortunately, what I got instead was a bit of a mess. The book does deliver on its promises – everyone dies, it has a fairy-tale flavour, it’s definitely horror – but the way the deaths play out felt forced and even at times, ridiculous. The balance of the tale shifted widely. Some of the deaths were almost slapstick in their delivery, while others were quite gruesome. A Small Tribute to a Wonderful Professor

When I first went to Trent University, there was an introductory week where you could attend sample lectures to test out classes. I said to myself, "how smart would I sound if I knew Latin?" so I went to the Latin lecture. Out came this funny man with a bag of sidewalk chalk. His enthusiasm and charm immediately won me over and learning Latin became about more than just "sounding smart". That man was one of my professors, David Page. Each year I was at Trent, I made sure I had classes with David (as he preferred to be called). He taught me Latin and Roman history. He made each class interesting using that sidewalk chalk "to make it colourful" and explaining concepts so we could all understand. I struggled a lot with the languages and the nuances of translation, but his patience never ran out - or if it did, he hid it well! But because of him, I stuck with Latin.
